Petrowave Solutions Inc. was founded by Randy Mutch - who combines 27 years in the drilling industry with an information technology diploma and eight years' experience as a software developer and IT manager for the oil and gas industry.
Petrowave's senior management team also includes Cameron Befus, a systems architect with 17 years' experience in the oil and gas sector, and Murray Paton, who has spent 15 years as a software developer, systems analyst and project leader, five in the oil and gas sector.
This unusual combination of drilling industry and software development and management experience among Petrowave's senior management team gives the company a unique understanding of the needs and requirements of the industry.
As President, Randy is responsible for all corporate operations.
Randy has worked in the Canadian drilling industry for 27 years. For his first 17 years in the industry, he worked in drilling operations positions for both contractors and operators. His career began as a roughneck near Edson, Alberta, in 1974. He joined Dome Petroleum in 1981 and spent a decade at Dome and Amoco as a drilling foreman and drilling contracts manager. Two of those years were spent on rigs in the Beaufort Sea.
In 1994, Randy graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with a diploma in Computer Technology. Until the creation of Petrowave Solutions Inc. in 2000, Randy worked as a software developer, business systems consultant and IT manager in the oil and gas sector.
Randy's combination of many years' experience in the oil and gas drilling industry, and his extensive work with software development and management for the industry, gives Petrowave a unique in-depth understanding of the industry's software requirements.
In his spare time, Randy likes to ski and camp with his family. He has an extensive archive of drilling rig photographs, some of which are featured on the Petrowave web site.
Cameron Befus, who leads Petrowave’s Systems Architecture team, has spent 17 years developing and managing oil and gas industry software. He has worked for software development companies, multinational oil and gas exploration companies, and related service and regulatory organizations and agencies. Cameron has specialized in the creation of commercial software using object-oriented techniques where there is a requirement for high quality software, documentation and support.
In the oil and gas industry, Cameron has worked in areas that include Public Petroleum Data Model modeling, land sales analysis, oil and gas project evaluation, crude oil marketing, pipeline flow optimization, gas purchasing and contracts, production reporting, well log library systems and well data administration.
Cameron's interests include golfing with his wife and scuba diving in the Caribbean.
Murray Paton, who heads Business Systems development for Petrowave Solutions Inc., has spent 15 years as a software developer, systems analyst and project leader.
After obtaining his BSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, Murray started his career helping develop an aircraft inventory and maintenance system.
This was followed with an early exposure to the oil and gas industry through a three year stint at the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (then known as the Energy Resources Conservation Board). He then spent several more years in the transportation industry, developing systems for Trimac Transportation and Rentway Truck Leasing, that ranged from accounting and personnel, to preventative maintenance, shop management and invoicing applications. For the past five years, he has concentrated primarily on developing software solutions for the oilfield services sector, again developing systems in a range of areas.
Outside of work, Murray remains active playing soccer and squash, and through biking, hiking and other outdoor activities with his young family.
